Resources for Reading with Your Child at Home

Reading Tips

Here are some reading tips to help your child succeed:

  • Look at the front cover and make predictions about the story.

  • Read the title, author and illustrator to your child.

  • Encourage your child to point (tracking) to each word while they are reading.

  • Allow plenty of time for discussion before turning the page.

  • Ask - "what do you think will  happen next?"

  • After reading the book, go back and point out the strategies you saw your child using... "I noticed that you looked at the picture to help you with the word, that's a good strategy."

  • Try to do at least one follow up idea after each book is read: "Can you find the word ___?" "Tell me about your favourite part." "Where do the story take place (setting)?" "Who was the main character in the story?" Draw a picture.

Important high frequency words to look for and point out during your reading times are:

and     she     he     come     am     is     in     it     of     the     when     that     here     was     me     my     you         go    was     said     like     have
